Property Cybercrime is on the increase

5th July 2016

Property Cybercrime is on the increase but there are steps that can be taken to protect your property from being fraudulently sold or mortgaged.

Your property will be more at risk if:

  • Your identity has been stolen
  • You rent the property out
  • You live abroad
  • The property is empty
  • The property is mortgage free
  • The property isn’t registered at the Land Registry.

It is possible to sign up to obtain property alerts (https://propertyalert.landregistry.gov.uk) if someone applies to change the register of your property. This will not automatically block any changes to the register but it will alert you when something changes so you can take appropriate action. There is no fee to pay and it is possible to obtain alerts for up to ten properties, which is useful for those with investment portfolios.
