Leasehold Reform – Update

3rd August 2017

Following on from my last blog on potential leasehold reform, the Government is moving faster than anticipated to reform the system.

Recent examples of onerous leases have included a case where a homeowner was charged £1500 by the freeholder to make a small alteration to their home and another where the ground rent is expected to reach £10000 a year by 2060.

The Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid, has announced proposals to ban (apart from where there are exceptional circumstances) the sale of leasehold houses as well as restricting grounds to a peppercorn.

The Government has stated that this is a major move that will deliver a fairer and more transparent system.

The consultation will last for 8 weeks from 25th July 2017.
