Colin Makin
Associate in the Employment Department
Colin has practised employment law exclusively for over 12 years and his work covers all aspects of the employer/employee relationship from recruitment to termination. He undertakes both contentious and non-contentious employment law work for corporate clients as well as senior employees. Colin is know for his pragmatic and commercially aware advice.
Colin has significant experience of case preparation and Employment Tribunal procedure and has an in depth knowledge of TUPE and its application. He has advised on the employment aspects of a large number of business transfers and service provision changes. Colin has also undertaken a number of large scale redundancy exercises as well as advising on individual redundancies. His other work includes: advising on discrimination claims; drafting employment contracts; drafting and advising on compromise agreements; drafting policies and procedures; dealing with grievances and dismissals (including wrongful and unfair dismissal claims). Colin also has a particular interest in the protection of business interests, including confidential information, and the enforcement of restrictive covenants.
Colin often presents seminars on employment law issues and provides in-house training for managers and company directors. He has frequently been asked to comment on employment law issues on BBC radio. Colin has an LLM in Employment Law.
Originally from South Africa, Colin enjoys cricket, rugby, golf and skiing. His greatest passions are however motorcycles and spending quality time with friends and family.
Colin is a member of the Employment Lawyers' Association (ELA).
